2. You may have vermiculite-based insulation in your attic.
Here are a few precautions from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.
Make sure children are not allowed in the attic.
The attic should not be used for storage.
Only Trained Professionals should remodel or renovate.
All cracks and holes in the ceiling of the rooms below the insulation must be sealed.
Apply Caulking around light fixtures and the attic hatch to prevent insulation from falling through.
3. In 2018 Canada banned asbestos
According to Asbestos.com Canada made it illegal “to import, manufacture, sell, trade or use products made with the toxic mineral.” Canada will join 62 other countries from around the world that have banned asbestos. The big concern though comes with the exceptions Canada has put in place.
Canadian exceptions to the Asbestos Ban
Nuclear facilities and the Canadian military will be able to import and use asbestos products to service equipment through 2029.
The chlor-alkali industry — where the majority of asbestos is used in the U.S. — can use it in Canada until 2030.
The ban doesn’t include materials that already contain asbestos.
Special Permits to use Asbestos Material “protect the environment or human health where there is no technically or economically feasible alternative.”
